Bold Ideas to Rapidly Increase Transmission Capacity

According to some studies, the rates of transmission capacity expansion required for least-cost deep decarbonization and electrification are far greater than the rates achieved historically in transmission planning processes. If our goal is deep decarbonization and electrification, we must rapidly increase transmission capacity. This session will explore some of the bold ideas currently being examined to rapidly increase transmission capacity and the challenges that face those ideas. Panelists will discuss the policy, regulatory, and technical challenges associated with building and operating a U.S. "macro grid," using existing non-transmission corridors (e.g., railways, highways, etc.) for transmission expansion, and deployment of high-ampacity advanced conductor technologies.
