IREC joined local partners in Puerto Rico to complete an innovative microgrid project in Castañer, a rural community that is especially vulnerable to natural disasters. This microgrid is a multi-customer, multi-facility system that powers local businesses and residences using solar and battery storage. Its development required addressing regulatory, interconnection, technical, and community organization challenges. We’ll discuss the lessons learned from this project and how it can offer a model for other microgrid initiatives in the U.S. and worldwide.
