The aim of this panel session is to present the “grid-forming” inverter technology that is being actively developed through a DOE funded, NREL led, >$25M R&D program, including industry to address grid reliability challenges associated with high penetration of variable generation (solar, wind, including storage). The resulting decreasing in synchronous conventional generation, makes it essential that the new resources provide services required to maintain power grid stability and reliability.
