Description and Background: As the grid incorporates more distributed, renewable energy, security becomes critical for both de-risking asset management and ensuring overall grid stability. Recent security breaches at multi-Megawatt wind farms and inverter manufacturers underscore this need. All too often, commercial-scale projects fall far short of current best practices, leaving them vulnerable to attack or mismanagement. What’s more, rapidly evolving security standards may soon render a large portion of projects non-compliant, making security updates a priority. This session, targeted primarily at asset owners and operators, pinpoints concrete examples of good and bad security practices for distributed systems. By analyzing industry trends in security standards and best practices, it will give attendees an overview of the security landscape and anticipate which facets of security will become important for future projects.
