Energy resources on the distribution system (DERs) hold great promise for: balancing the inherent intermittency of renewables, addressing transmission constraints, responding to climate events and market fluctuations, and supporting electrification. Properly orchestrated, DERs equip utilities with the key capabilities needed to meet 100% clean energy targets while safely providing everyone with reliable energy at an affordable price.
Yet, delivering on DERs and DER orchestration requires much more than a DERMS implementation. Building off of the direction from SEPA in their ‘Beyond the Meter series’, we will share a holistic DER Operating Model that is key to cost effectively scale resources, increase Operator’s confidence in DERs, reliable and effective dispatching, equitable partnerships with 3rd party aggregators, aligning interests across customers, shareholders, and stakeholders, integrating DER capabilities into planning and operations, and instituting a performance management framework.
In combination with the right technology platform, a DER Operating Model can transform disconnected resources into a dispatchable virtual power plant that reliably meets the needs of grid and power operations. We will share PSE’s experience, lessons learned, and key outcomes with developing a holistic DER Operating Model in conjunction with the development of their Virtual Power Plant.
