Environmental Impact and Manufacturability of Magnelis® (Zinc Aluminum Magnesium) Coated Steels for Solar Mounting Structures

This poster will illustrate inhouse and independent research which has shown ArcelorMittal’s Magnelis® (Zinc Aluminum Magnesium) metallic coated steels have a smaller environmental footprint than alternative materials, are 100% recyclable, and offer better manufacturability than galvanized steels for solar mounting structures.

Compared to galvanized steels, Magnelis® metallic coated steels offers:
• A smaller CO2 footprint (vs. batch/post galvanized and alternative materials)
• Longer service life
• Less zinc runoff
• Less zinc required for equivalent performance
• Stamping/drawing with significant less galling, similar mass loss/powdering, and lower hold down forces
• Lower coefficient of friction benefiting roll forming
• Similar tool wear with less coating buildup on tooling
• Similar welding with less weld/heat affected zone post coating needed for corrosion protection

Magnelis® coated steel is a product that offers a smaller environmental footprint vs. batch galvanized and alternative materials, is 100% recyclable, and has better manufacturability than galvanized coated steel. It can be used for the fabrication of racks, rails, framing, posts, tubes, mounting brackets, electrical cabinets, cable trays, cable brackets, and transmission poles used for fixed ground, trackers, rooftop, and floating solar panel installations; making Magnelis® a great choice for these applications.
