Long duration energy storage (LDES) is at the epicenter of the clean energy transformation providing essential flexibility, grid reliability and resiliency. With aggressive decarbonization goals around the world, there are many challenges and barriers to the accelerated deployment of LDES. This technology session will examine the opportunity for innovative, yet proven energy storage technologies to accelerate the United States decarbonization pathway. From Advanced Compressed Air Energy Storage (A-CAES) to hydroelectric power - multiple mechanical based technologies offer medium to long duration, as well as seasonal storage solutions. These technologies are able to reduce curtailment as well as manage system constraints caused by or affecting renewable energy sources. This session details what kind of regulatory framework is required to incentivize investment into LDES technologies, lessons learned from projects currently under development, and a look to how LDES and renewables can work together to strengthen United States decarbonization goals.
