The Ins and Outs of Executing the World’s Largest Battery Projects

As the energy storage market matures and the urgency to address climate change intensifies, it is becoming essential for utilities, system regulators, and independent power producers to have the knowledge and confidence to execute very large-scale projects.

The world’s biggest battery installations are meaningfully reducing emissions because they have the ability to replace the power previously produced by fossil fuel plants. One example is the 850 MW/1,680 MWh Waratah Super Battery in New South Wales, Australia, which is able to instantly respond to changing grid conditions and can supply 850MW of power in 250 milliseconds or less. The battery is being installed on the former Munmorah coal plant site, and will supplement the grid capacity lost when Australia’s largest coal plant Eraring closes in 2025.
