As the energy storage sector continues to grow and mature, experts agree that augmentation is critical for designing battery systems - not only for optimal performance reasons - but also to last >20 years. Land availability and proximity to substations are critical in order to develop energy storage. We need storage facilities that are optimally placed and correctly sized to truly reduce CO2 emissions and provide the critical arteries for renewable generation. This, coupled with digital AI technologies will play a significant role in the industry. Software and hardware coupled with digital AI will be crucial technologies that unlock the potential of energy storage. Taking it one step further, within the vast world of energy storage, augmentation strategy is a key area that has not fully been studied deeply. We are beginning to get data from operational projects but we will need digital technology tools and artificial intelligence (AI). This is needed to truly transition to the next level of energy storage adoption and penetration in the market. There is a need for new innovation in data science and practical knowledge to bring solutions to the industry to optimize performance and economic returns. Predicting correct augmentation of Lithium-ion batteries and competing technologies of LPF and NMC can be complex with many variables such as weather and unforeseen events. Digital innovation and AI offer a new perspective to predictive augmentation and new possibilities to improve battery system design and operations.
