In the world’s transition towards renewable energies, efficient and reliable energy storage systems are crucial. Batteries are playing an increasingly significant role in enabling energy acquired from intermittent renewable sources to be stored and to stabilize the grid. Yet, the fast-growing market comes with significant challenges. With the increasing size of ESS sites and growing portfolios, solutions and approaches must be robust and scalable to solve the most pressing technical and commercial challenges. Technical risks such as malfunctioning components, that can in a worst-case scenario lead to thermal runaways and battery fires, as well as underperformance of the system need to be prevented. Commercial risks surrounding for example warranty management need to be controlled and the overall business case must be secured by ensuring high performance and long lifetime of the storage system.
As the market is still relatively new, there is a lack of historic data thus limited insights into battery lifetime and degradation. Technologies need to fill the gap to provide integrators, operators, and asset owners insights into how long energy storage system batteries are likely to last (safely) under various operating conditions.
In this session, different approaches to battery analytics are presented that help identify technical (e.g., battery safety, health) as well as financial (e.g., warranty) risks and actively mitigate them with a targeted operation of energy storage systems.
